Through the window of a café in which I was sitting, drinking coffee, I watched, but could not overhear, the conversation of a couple who’d stopped on the sidewalk so that the dog that was with them (and whose leash the woman was holding) could greet, and linger with, a dog that was being walked by a person who was also nearby.
