From the Desk of … Olivia Wolfgang-Smith

This week I asked Olivia Wolfgang-Smith (Brooklyn-based author of fiction and creative nonfiction) to share a picture and talk about one item on her desk.

That rock is from my MFA thesis advisor, who held on to it during my defense. I’m not particularly superstitious, but it’s helpful to have the thing nearby when the words aren’t coming easily, as a memento of one of my most confident days as a writer. Also, I don’t currently have a dedicated workspace—I draft in whatever notebook is handy in restaurants; at this coffee table; on lunch breaks; in bed at 1am; and on the train, on the train, on the train. With a practice that spatially inconsistent, it’s just good sense to have a (portable) talisman. – Olivia Wolfgang-Smith
